Give, Give, and Then Give Some More

11 12 2008

The economy sucks. Duh. But multiply your petty problems by 10 for the needy. This year is going to be particularly difficult for them since the trickle down is drying up.

Living the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 lifestyle is really hard right now but try not to give up your tithing.

Search around for items you don’t use and donate them to a good cause.

We found an Apple G3 laptop computer that was begging for attention, cleaned it up, and donated to Compass Community Services, a great family adoption program in San Francisco.picture-12

Another foundation that we love is the Kids of Equador program that my friends Jeff and Kristen Slye started awhile back. Here’s information on the program.

Ecoist ~ Billboard and Wrapper Bags

14 08 2008

Check this out. You can shop by movie title or candy wrapper for your next purse.

Go to Ecoist and click the “Shop Wrapper” and “Shop Movie Title” options in the upper right hand corner of the screen. That’s way too much fun. I think the bar code style is the one for me.

Ecoist offers accessories made from mostly repurposed and sustainable materials and are produced in fair trade, sweatshop-free environments.

They hope to inspire more people to become “Ecoists” and think differently about the things they buy, how they are made, where they come from, and vote for a more sustainable world

Working Remotely

14 07 2008

For the past month I’ve been working from a location in northern Wisconsin. A rather remote location that required my laptop, my iPhone, a laptop USB connect card, and a good amount of patience.

For the most part, I have to say that the experience was a very good one. Plugging in the card on that first day was nerve racking….not knowing whether or not the service area map provided by At&t was accurate. Once my familiar internet home page popped up there was a HUGE sigh of relief. It seems a miracle considering not too long ago the house was on a “party-line” phone system. It’s the end of the planet.

We use Macs here at DK Design so the only At&t card that worked was the 3G 881 USBConnect. You plug it into the USB port on your laptop and it literally turns it into a cell phone. You have a phone number and you purchase their service plan for about $60 a month. They will waive the price of the card if you buy a two year plan.

After setting up a little HP Deskjet Printer that I bought at Best Buy on my way up [that worked like a champ] and a 19″ monitor that I purchased from a guy in Madison off of Craig’s List, I was ready to work. I was able to do all my graphic design projects, photography, and project management just like I was in the Oakland or Tahoe offices. Of course, the internet access was a bit slow but considering where I was but, I was NOT complaining.

Our goal is to open a mid-west office and it will probably be at this location. I’ve found a DSL provider that we can install there after the new building is built which will give us even greater flexibility.

Macworld 2008

15 01 2008

Steve Jobs introduced the MacBook Air laptop, Time Capsule, an upgrade to the iPhone, and Movie Rentals on iTunes.

The MacBook Air is the most beautiful laptop ever made. I believe it should have been called the Potato Chip…and that’s probably why I don’t work at Apple.

The iPhone Maps software upgrade is exciting. It can find and display its current location, by triangulating on nearby cell towers using technology from Google. It’s a great feature …and a good friend at Google worked on the application!

The rest of the Exhibition was similar to past Macworlds. The Adobe demonstrations are great, Crumpler had a very creative booth again [Karla and I both bought Crumpler laptop bags this year], Belkin’s apartment complex booth is an architectural treat, and you gotta love QUARK still touring with our Launch 7 presentation materials!

Here’s a link to all my photos.
