Green Gift Giving List

26 11 2007

If you are interested in giving green this holiday season we’ve put together a list of options.

EarthMoment, a project of Ogden Publications, links to hundreds of online stores – big and small, green and not-so-green alike – and donates a percentage or flat fee from shoppers’ purchases to a range of carbon offset projects.

Tree Hugger [yes, all the conservative readers just gave us a mighty 'eye roll'] has a yearly Green Gift Guide that, this year, has shades of green. Dark green being the best choice for least amount of impact.

Grist which promotes giving nothing or ’stuff-free’ gifts.

Salvage or thrift shops [local to the bay area].

Oxfam Unwrapped which gives a gift, in the recipients name, to a person in need. I donated the school desk and chair in my 4 year old nephew’s name for his birthday. You’d think that he’d never speak to me again but quite the opposite. He actually made the connection and really felt the joy of giving. Of course the program is used symbolically, but for some people…especially children…making that personal connection helps them learn compassion. Click here for an explanation of how it works.

World of Good creates opportunities for hundreds of artisan cooperatives around the world to share their best work with you by serving as a bridge to the U.S. retail market. They respectfully assist artisans by providing access to fair wages, safe working conditions and long-term economic sustainability.

Sundance has a nice list of options here.

The California Dept. of Conservation Green Gift Guide is light on content, but easy to read and navigate.

And for skeptical readers, here’s a list of sins you can keep an eye out for used by some companies trying to take advantage of the green marketplace.
