Tunnel From NYC to London Finally Complete!

31 05 2008

Hardly anyone knows that a secret tunnel runs deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

In May 2008, more than a century after it was begun, the tunnel has finally been completed.

An extraordinary optical device called a Telectroscope has been installed at both ends which miraculously allows people to see right through the Earth from London to New York and vice versa.

Green Exchange Building ~ Chicago

25 05 2008

Chicago is near and dear to my heart for several reasons, but lately it’s been because of its commitment to sustainable initiatives. These initiatives are transforming it into one of the greenest cities in the world.

Unsurprisingly, the first large-scale shopping center in the United States devoted entirely to socially responsible products and services is being built 10 minutes north of the Loop.

Not only are the developers employing reuse [they are repurposing a 250,000 sq ft factory] and sustainable practices [LEED certification, solar panels, a green roof, priority parking for electric vehicles, HVAC system] they are also securing the site as a landmark.

The building is due to open this fall. Lots more information can be found here.

Sustainable Packaging Coalition

20 05 2008

This entry was sent by our good friend Dennis at Session Creative.

The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is an industry working group inspired by cradle to cradle principles and dedicated to transforming packaging into a system that encourages economic prosperity and a sustainable flow of materials.

What Is Sustainable Packaging?
1. Is beneficial, safe & healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle;
2. Meets market criteria for performance and cost;
3. Is sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy;
4. Maximizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials;
5. Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices;
6. Is made from materials healthy in all probable end of life scenarios;
7. Is physically designed to optimize materials and energy;
8. Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial cradle to cradle cycles.

They believe that by successfully addressing these criteria, packaging can be transformed into a cradle to cradle flow of packaging materials in a system that is economically robust and provides benefit throughout the life cycle—a sustainable packaging system.

They offer a class called The Essentials of Sustainable Packaging that you can review or sign up for here.

Todd Jersey Takes the Plunge

6 05 2008

The renovation of the historic Richmond, California Plunge is now underway. The natatorium that opened in 1926 had been closed since 1997 and was on it’s way to becoming demolished when Todd Jersey Architecture stepped in with their plan. They proposed an alternate design for the historic building that would cost half as much and would reopen the pool within a matter of years.

The construction work will be done in two phases.

Phase one includes the restoration of the original natatorium structure, which houses the swimming pool, and the renovation of the 10,000 square foot swimming pool itself. West Bay Builders has been chosen as the Contractor for phase one. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2008 and be completed in early 2009.

Phase two includes rebuilding the changing, bath and shower facilities and restoring the front, neoclassical part of the building. The design work for phase two is currently underway. Construction funding for phase two is currently being sought. Pending funding, construction for phase two should begin in early 2009 and be completed in early 2010.

The Plunge is scheduled to reopen upon the completion of phase two in early to mid 2010.
